Desktop Clutter

During the Windows XP development process Microsoft began a “clean desktop” initiative, to attempt to make the Windows desktop a more useful place to run applications and save the user time by not having to minimize apps to launch new processes (that’s what the Start Menu is for). It was also the intention of Microsoft […]

SSD Installed

My Dell Mini 9 now has a 16GB SSD and 2GB of RAM, and it is running Windows XP Professional (luckily Microsoft licensing stupidities do not apply once a consumer has possession of the device). It is somewhat faster than before, and the drive certainly makes me feel more like I can actually install software […]

Finally! My SSD Ships

Just got a message that my 16GB SSD for my Dell Mini 9 has shipped! 🙂 It has been well over a month since the drive was ordered, and only one place sells them, so I had no choice but to wait, but it is finally on its way, expected by Saturday 🙂 Woohoo!

RFC turns 40, Postel dis’d

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/opinion/07crocker.html?_r=1 Stephen D. Crocker is a disrespectful ass. He has written this quite lovely document about the RFC series, and mentions “I offered to organize our early notes.”. Yes, Crocker “offered” to organize the early notes, but Jon Postel was the RFC Editor, he is the one who actually organized them. Nice revisionist history lesson […]

MCTS: 70-536

I have just done something that makes me incredibly nervous. I have registered for Microsoft’s 70-536 certification exam. The English title is: “Microsoft .NET Framework – Application Development Foundation”. The exam is covering a lot of what I did in my C# Programming course and now in my Advanced C# Programming course. Under most circumstances […]

Widescreen Wallpaper

Remember when 1024×768 wallpapers were distributed by like every major company as soon as they had a website? Well, I’m wondering why that same thing has not yet happened at the 1600×900 level. I have a new Dell 20” Wide LCD (16:9 ratio) and have discovered that I have no wallpaper for it. I have […]

Road Runner Turbo with Wireless

Along with the deal I got suckered into for having TWC for 2 years, I received the Road Runner Wireless Home Networking service. TWC provides very few details about the service initially, except that it provides wireless access for several machines. Originally the service was not installed because an appointment was never scheduled for it. […]

Useless Sales Support

Want to know the worst thing about being a Time Warner customer? It isn’t the flakey service, or their inability to resolve problems, but their inability to do anything effectively, including operate a sales department. On Friday I set out on a simple mission, to upgrade the account to be Road Runner Turbo (10Mbps) and […]

Problem with Mini Windows

I have had a less than fun day trying to install Windows XP on the Mini 9. First, had to image the system so I could restore it, that required: Getting GRUB to boot a USB key Managing to make Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex Live run Figuring out a terminal application that does not fit in […]

Entering Mini World

In keeping with my mother’s tradition of strange gifts for my birthday, she has this year decided to give me the world’s smallest computer, a Dell Mini 9. It is almost like a laptop, except it only has a 4GB Solid State Drive and 512MB of RAM (although a 16GB SS D and 2GB RAM […]
