DATA STRUCTURES (ITCS2214) – A study of the theory and implementation of abstract data types (ADTs) including stacks, queues, and both general purpose and specialized trees and graphs. Programming emphasis is on the use of an object-oriented language to implement algorithms related to the various data structures studied including creation, searching, and traversal of ADTs. SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION (COMM2105) – Principles of discussion and deliberation in small groups. Practice in organizing, leading, and participating in various forms of group communication. Emphasis on problem solving and leadership skills.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONING (KNES1201) – The application and basic science of physical training programs designed to improve and maintain physical fitness. (Fall, Spring)
INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE SCIENCE (ITCS3216) – Crosslisted as PSYC 3216. Prerequisite: Consent of the Department. Interdisciplinary introduction to the science of the mind. Broad coverage of such topics as philosophy of mind, human memory processes, reasoning and problem solving, artificial intelligence, language processing (human and machine), neural structures and processes, and vision. (Spring, Alternate Years)
CERAMICS WHEEL I (ARTC2172) – Introduction to wheel forming methods and emphasis on skill development, design, glaze application, utilitarian and sculptural concepts, and basic high-fire techniques. Six hours. (Fall, Spring)
METAPHYSICS (PHIL3275) – Inquiry into the most fundamental and comprehensive structures and categories of reality, especially in relation to persons as knowers and agents. Discussion of such topics as: being, existence and truth; substance, essence ad accident; universals and individuals; mind, soul, matter and god.

After almost a 9 month absense, the Belk Tower, at the center of UNCC’s academic buildings now chimes again. It chimes on the hour and then sings 3 times a day. The absence of the sounds of the electronic Carillon in the tower caused a major “disconnecting” of the University community. The tower has always been a popular spot to gather, but it wasn’t until this morning that I remembered just how much more dramatic the activity level at the tower was last year before the Carillon ceased functioning. I was quite suprised this morning when I was entereing the campus and heard the sounds of the carillon chiming. Last Fall the tower played music 5 minutes before my noon class, so it was always sort of a warning of the time, but in some ways a motivational boost. I am very excited that the tower is back to its old self again.

Mrs. Scott has now officially pissed me off, she has caused a need for a new status to be created for GITI Assignments.

For my ITCS1215 (Intro to Computer Sci II) online course, in the instruction page on WebCTfor the mid-term it states “Be sure to read the instruction page in the WebCT mid-term link before beginning the exam”. Am I missing something here, or is Mrs. Scott being loopy again?

Well… I went to my ITIS2300 Exam today.
10:53 – Arrive in Atkins 126
11:01 – Exams distributed
11:06 – Exam start signaled
11:17 – Exam complete and turned in
The exam was 5 “short” answer essay questions. By “short” he meant tiny. No complete sentances were needed, “list 3” or “list 5” was the instruction on most of the questions.
Mr. Long’s humor in teaching has its place, today was one of those times, I don’t know that I have ever been so relaxed for an exam. The combination of factors was just so strange. I saw my first ever UNCC blue book, its one of those things that high school teachers tell you to expect, but then I just had never seen one and the seriousness of the book itself made me somewhat uneasy, up until the point when Mr. Long said “if you like, sign the academic integrity policy if you like, I dont care, I trust all of you”. He followed that one with “oh, and if you would, turn them in in alphabetical order so I can grade them easier”. The exam itself I would describe as “comprehensive”, it hit all of the points it needed to hit and pretty much confirmed whether or not we knew what we were supposed to. That being said, ever since I began college back in high school (insert chuckles here) I have been used to the word “exam” creating fear and anxiety and it being associated with a long strenuous test. No so in this case, I had seen all of the questions before (see link below), and the exam was a tiny half page document, printed on cheap paper. Way to go Mr. Long, your exam was just what it should have been, no more no less (although, a bonus question asking us to identify the crusty ole broad may have lightened the mood a little more at the end).

The ones he selected were:

ok, I know these computer sci people are like major nerds, but what the fuck?

I am no longer sure how to take Dr. Long anymore. Today’s phrase of the day was something to the effect of “She was a crusty old broad” in reference to Grace Hopper, the finder of the first computer bug, and developer of modern programming technology (Mother of COBOL).

I think his whole Navy thing is a bit confusing, maybe im being just a bit hard on him? His trivia is interesting but it is complete bullshit in the way of getting curriculum across to students. We were learning JavaScript, not COBOL and not “the history of entemology”. I think the department should stick him to teaching ITIS1200, freshman seminar. There ya go Dr. Long, the perfect assignment for you.
ok, any volenteers to be next up on my chopping block?
UPDATE: I have revised my opinion of Dr. Long’s statement, it was unprofessional and quite offensive to the legacy of Admiral Hopper. If Dr. Long is going to put these people on a pedestal, he can do it without attempting to insult them, especially the dead ones. (I think a Tim Berners-Lee joke would have been hillarious). No more jokes should be made about the dead, they have suffered enough.
